📍 Step 1 – Stay Calm and Gather Information

⏱ 5 minutes

Before heading out to search, take a few minutes to gather important information.

☐ Note the exact location where your pet was last seen.

☐ Record the date and time your pet went missing.

☐ Determine which direction your pet was traveling, if known.

☐ Gather several recent photographs that clearly show your pet.

☐ Write down your pet's description, including collar, tags, and distinguishing markings.

☐ Confirm that your pet's microchip registration and contact information are current.

ðŸū Step 2 – Determine Your Pet's Behavior

Different animals behave differently when they become lost.ïŧŋ

🔍 Step 3 – Begin Your Search Immediately

⏱ 30–60 minutes

☐ Search the immediate area carefully.

☐ Ask neighbors to check garages, sheds, under decks, and other hiding places.

☐ Continue searching during the early morning and evening when many animals are more active.

☐ If searching for a frightened dog, avoid chasing it. Observe its direction of travel and report sightings instead.

ðŸ“Ē Step 4 – Notify Others

⏱ 20–30 minutes

☐ Contact nearby animal shelters and animal control agencies.

☐ Notify local veterinarians if appropriate.

☐ Create clear, easy-to-read lost pet flyers.

☐ Share your pet on local lost pet and neighborhood social media groups.

☐ Ask friends and neighbors to share your post.

🗚ïļ Step 5 – Establish a Recovery Plan

Depending on your situation, consider using one or more of the following:

ðŸĶī Feeding station

📷 Cellular trail camera

ðŸŠĪ Humane trap

🚁 Thermal drone

ðŸšķ Neighborhood search

📍 Sighting map

ïŧŋ

Remember that no single method works for every situation. The best recovery plans often combine several techniques.

🚁 Step 6 – When Can a Thermal Drone Search Help?

A thermal drone can be an extremely effective search tool, but only under the right conditions.

Thermal searches are often most effective:

✅ During the first few days after a pet goes missing

✅ At night or during the early morning

✅ In open fields, grasslands, vineyards, orchards, and similar terrain

Thermal searches may be less effective:

❌ During hot afternoons

❌ In dense brush or heavy tree canopy

❌ When the pet has already traveled far from the search area

⚠ïļ Step 7 – Avoid These Common Mistakes

Avoid actions that can reduce your chances of recovery.

❌ Running after a dog

❌ Yelling

❌ Waiting

❌ Sitting at home

❌ Only searching once

❌ Sending money

ðŸ›Ąïļ Step 8 – Protect Yourself from Scams

ðŸšĻ WARNING — Protect Yourself from Scammers

Unfortunately, scammers frequently target families searching for a missing pet. They often monitor lost pet posts on Facebook and other social media platforms, then contact owners claiming they have found their pet or can help recover it—for a fee.

❌ Never send money to anyone who contacts you first.

Legitimate professionals do not operate this way.

 âœ… Professional drone search teams

 âœ… Certified tracking dog teams

 âœ… Search and Rescue organizations

âœ… Reputable lost pet recovery specialists

will never contact you out of the blue demanding payment before helping.

Only hire and pay professionals that you contacted yourself after researching and verifying their credentials.

🚁 Verify Any Drone Search Service

If someone offers to perform a drone search for your missing pet:

✅ Ask whether they hold an FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate. Anyone providing commercial drone services in the United States is generally required to have this certification.

✅ Ask for the pilot's full name and a photo or copy of their FAA Remote Pilot Certificate.

✅ Verify that the certificate belongs to them using the FAA Airmen Registry:

FAA Airmen Registry

A legitimate professional drone pilot should have no hesitation providing this information.

ðŸšĐ Be cautious if someone refuses to identify themselves, won't provide proof of their FAA certification, or pressures you to send money before answering basic questions.

ðŸ”Ū Be Cautious of "Pet Psychics"

Some individuals claim they can communicate with your missing pet or know exactly where it is—for a fee.

There is no scientific evidence that pet psychics can locate missing animals. While these claims may sound convincing, they often prey on families during one of the most emotional times of their lives.

Your time, money, and energy are far better spent on proven recovery methods such as flyers, neighborhood searches, trail cameras, tracking dogs, and professional thermal drone searches.

✅ When in Doubt…

If anyone contacts you claiming they have your pet or can recover your pet:

  • ❌ Never send money immediately.
  • ❌ Never allow yourself to be pressured into making a quick decision.
  • ✅ Verify who they are.
  • ✅ Ask for evidence.
  • ✅ Research their credentials.
  • ✅ Talk with someone you trust before sending any payment.

Remember: Legitimate professionals welcome questions and are happy to verify their credentials. Scammers rely on urgency, fear, and emotion to pressure you into sending money before you've had time to think.
