Some pets come into our lives unexpectedly. They become part of our daily routine, our family, and before we realize it, part of our heart. Lily was that kind of companion for me.
Lily came into my life when I started dating my now-wife more than thirteen years ago. In many ways, I inherited her as part of the marriage. Before I came along, Lily spent every night alone in the laundry room. The door wouldn't even stay closed on its own—it was held shut with bungee cords. Looking back, I like to think she deserved better, and thankfully that chapter of her life came to an end.
When we moved in together, I asked my wife if Lily could sleep in our bedroom instead. That simple change transformed both of our lives.
From that day forward, Lily became my best friend. I didn't know it at the time, but we would share that bedtime routine for nearly every night over the next twelve years.
Every night she slept beside me. Before either of us could go to sleep, she demanded her nightly affection. During the day, her favorite thing in the world was having her head rubbed. If I tried to stop before she was ready, I had to be quick pulling my hand away—otherwise she'd gently—well, not always so gently—grab my hand with her paw to let me know she wasn't finished yet. It was her way of saying, "I'm not done loving on you. It was one of the countless little routines that made her uniquely Lily.
She was always an indoor cat. On the rare occasions she managed to sneak outside, she never wandered far from home. Once, I even had to climb up and rescue her from the roof. She always knew where she belonged.
I never had children of my own, so the bond I shared with Lily is difficult to put into words. She became part of my everyday life for more than twelve years. While I love all of the cats that spend time in my office, there was something special about ending every day with Lily curled up beside me. Those quiet moments at the end of every day created a bond that is difficult to describe. Anyone who has ever shared their life with a beloved pet will probably understand exactly what I mean.
