Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to Common Questions About Lost Pet Prevention and Recovery
Whether you're preparing before your pet is ever lost or searching for a missing companion right now, you probably have questions.
Below are answers to the questions we're asked most often. If you don't see your question here, please don't hesitate to contact us.
Prevention
Should every pet wear an ID tag?
Yes.
A visible ID tag is often the fastest way for someone to return your pet. Many reunions happen within minutes simply because a neighbor can call the phone number on the collar.
Even if your pet has a microchip, it should still wear a properly fitted collar with a current ID tag whenever possible.
Should my pet be microchipped?
Absolutely.
A registered microchip provides permanent identification if your pet loses its collar or ID tag.
Remember, a microchip only works if your registration information is current.
Is a microchip a GPS tracker?
No.
A microchip cannot tell you where your pet is.
It simply stores a unique identification number that can be read by a scanner after your pet has been found.
Should I get a GPS collar or an Apple AirTag?
It depends on your pet's lifestyle.
AirTags work well in populated areas where nearby Apple devices can update their location.
GPS collars provide near real-time tracking and are generally the better choice for active dogs, rural properties, hiking, hunting, and pets that spend time away from neighborhoods.
How often should I update my pet's photographs?
At least twice a year.
Puppies, kittens, and pets that change appearance because of grooming or aging should be photographed more frequently.
If Your Pet Is Missing
What should I do first?
Start with our Lost Pet Recovery Checklist.
The first few hours are often the most important. Staying organized and acting quickly can significantly improve your chances of bringing your pet home.
Should I chase my frightened dog?
Usually not.
Many frightened dogs enter survival mode and may run farther away if they are chased.
Every situation is different, but remaining calm and using proven recovery techniques is often more effective than pursuing the dog.
Should I search at night?
Many lost dogs become more active during the evening and overnight hours when the environment is quieter.
However, every search should consider safety, weather, terrain, and local conditions.
How far can a lost dog travel?
There is no single answer.
Some dogs remain within a few hundred yards of where they disappeared.
Others travel many miles.
Factors include:
- Breed
- Temperament
- Fear level
- Terrain
- Weather
- Human activity
How far do lost cats usually travel?
Many indoor cats remain surprisingly close to home.
They often hide beneath decks, inside sheds, under vehicles, or in dense vegetation.
Outdoor cats may travel farther, especially if they are accustomed to roaming.
Thermal Drone Searches
Can a thermal drone find my pet?
Sometimes.
Thermal imaging can be extremely effective under the right conditions, but no technology can guarantee a successful recovery.
Success depends on weather, terrain, vegetation, animal behavior, and how quickly the search begins.
Can thermal cameras see through trees or bushes?
No.
Thermal cameras cannot see through solid objects or dense vegetation.
If your pet is completely hidden beneath thick cover, thermal imaging may not detect it.
Do thermal drones work during the day?
Yes.
However, thermal searches are often most effective during the evening, at night, or early morning when the ground has cooled and the temperature contrast is greater.
Will thermal imaging work in the rain?
Light rain may still allow a search, but heavy rain, dense fog, and other weather conditions can significantly reduce effectiveness.
We'll evaluate conditions before every flight.
Trail Cameras
When is a trail camera helpful?
Trail cameras are useful when a pet is believed to be repeatedly visiting a particular location or traveling along a consistent route.
They help us monitor an area without disturbing the pet.
Will a trail camera scare my pet?
No.
Modern trail cameras are designed to operate quietly and are commonly used to monitor wildlife without affecting animal behavior.
Professional Search Services
Do you guarantee you'll find my pet?
No.
No ethical search professional can guarantee a successful recovery.
Every search is different.
Our commitment is to provide honest recommendations, professional equipment, and evidence-based search strategies that maximize your chances of success.
How do you know if a drone search is appropriate?
We evaluate each case individually.
Factors include:
- Time since the pet disappeared
- Species
- Weather
- Terrain
- Vegetation
- Recent sightings
- Animal behavior
Sometimes another search method is more appropriate, and we'll tell you if that's the case.
Do you only search for dogs?
No.
We assist with searches for:
- Dogs
- Cats
- Horses
- Goats
- Sheep
- Cattle
- Other livestock
Each species behaves differently, and search strategies are adjusted accordingly.
How large an area can you search?
That depends on the terrain, vegetation, weather, and search objectives.
Open fields can often be searched much more quickly than dense forests or urban neighborhoods.
We'll discuss realistic expectations before beginning any search.
Technology
Should I rely only on a GPS tracker?
No.
The best protection comes from multiple layers:
- Visible ID tag
- Registered microchip
- GPS tracker or AirTag
- Current photographs
- Lost Pet Folder
Each serves a different purpose.
How often should I charge my GPS collar?
Follow the manufacturer's recommendations and make battery checks part of your regular routine.
A dead GPS collar can't help locate your pet.
Scams
I've received a call saying someone found my pet and wants money. Is it legitimate?
Be extremely cautious.
Unfortunately, scammers often target families searching for lost pets.
Never send money before verifying your pet's identity and location.
If something feels suspicious, stop and verify the information.
General Questions
Do you travel outside your primary service area?
Yes.
While we primarily serve Northern California, we may travel farther depending on the circumstances, scheduling, and travel requirements.
Please contact us to discuss your location.
How quickly should I contact you?
As soon as possible.
The sooner a search strategy is developed, the more options are usually available.
Even if you aren't sure you need professional assistance, we're happy to discuss your situation and help determine the most appropriate next steps.
Can Search and Rescue (SAR) dogs search for my lost dog?
Generally, no.
Most Search and Rescue K9 teams are trained to locate missing people, not dogs or other animals. Their training, certification, and deployment protocols are designed for human search missions.
While there are a few specialized organizations that work with lost pets, traditional SAR K9 teams are not equipped or trained to track missing dogs.
If your pet is missing, the best approach is to begin a structured recovery plan as quickly as possible using proven lost pet recovery techniques.
